"The images are a heady mixture of deranged self portraits, anatomic studies and sexy role play"

As there is a new Alien film out right now, I thought it felt quite current to start my residency with this book of H. R. Giger Polaroids, published in 2014. Although featuring some Alien related images, it is more of a mind trip of experiments and documents shot by Giger from the late 70s through to the mid 90s. The images are a heady mixture of deranged self portraits, anatomic studies and sexy role play, allowing a brief glance into the mind of the innovative Swiss artist.

For the uninitiated, in 1979 Giger was hired by Ridley Scott to design characters and sets for ‘Alien’ using his 1977 book, Necronomicon, as a visual blueprint. He also created the cover for Blondie’s debut solo album ‘KooKoo’ in 1981. They were to meet again two years later on David Cronenberg’s ‘Videodrome’ where he played a sultry masochistic radio host. Quite a renaissance man.
