Penguin Books have always had a strong ethos when it comes to their creative direction, whether utilising the classic minimalist coloured stripe or allegorical illustration, they always hit the mark.

Penguin Science Fiction covers deserve a closer look, in particular the talented creative directors, artists and illustrators that helped shape the way the future looked.

︎'Make Room! Make Room!' Alan Aldridge, 1967

Part 1: In the mid-1960s a young Alan Aldridge (who would later go on to work with Warhol, The Beatles, The Who etc.) was appointed art director of the science fiction division. He brought with him his unique coloured illustrations and introduced a new layout with the black, white and mauve palette, which really set the titles apart from other Penguin books.
